is there something wrong with me?

today i was talking to another mom and she was telling me that she won't let her daughter go to a friends house for a sleep over. she said she is too scared that something might happen. she said she wakes up at 2 am every day and goes and checks on her daughter. her daughter is 6. she then proceeded to tell me that she doesn't know what to do about the ballet her daughter is in. should she sit in the audience and watch or should she volunteer to help behind stage so she can keep an eye on her. is there something wrong with me? if i don't hear my child during the night i sleep soundly. if she is in a production i don't worry that she will be abducted from behind stage. if she goes to the bathroom i don't wipe her. if she doesn't brush all her teeth i don't redo it. i don't know how to relate to this mom when it comes to parenting, however i like this mom and i consider her a friend. i like her although we don't see eye to eye on parenting issues. i hope it never comes into play when i am her daughters girl scout leader and i want to take her camping or not have her mom around. i think if the situation should occur the mom will not allow the daughter to participate. i am not one of those parents who needs to have a death grip on my child. i do watch what they do and i keep them safe but i don't stifle them. as a parent you need to give your child breathing room. they have to experience life for themselves. if they don't they will never be able to live on their own. what will they do when they go off to college. not even college, is my child going to expect me to wipe her or brush her teeth when she's 16? i don't even like to do those things now. i can't imagine when they get older. mark and i are already discussing what age we can leave then home alone. we are looking forward to when they go away to college and we get our lives back. don't get me wrong, i love my children. they are the best things to happen to me. they drive me crazy but i would die without them(and yes i am holding back tears right now). i want the best for them and i want them to be happy. i don't think they will get the chance to do that if i am constantly watching over them. so again i ask; is there something wrong with me?

There is NOTHING wrong with you! Never think that again!

This woman needs to be told she is rather psycho. Her daughter will never grow up to be an independent woman if she continues on this path.

Parents that do that kind of thing make me want to scream

oh lordy, there is something wrong with HER, not you. I totally agree with you about kids leading their own lives and not being micromanaged.

I think it's so great that you are Lill's GS leader. I can't WAIT to do that with Grace!
